Temptations...

The week after New Years at our gym was a mad house!!!! I had never seen it so full before; spinning classes were packed, people were practically standing on top of each other in toning classes, not an empty elliptical in the house! What a great thing to see-People wanting to change their health for the better! January is the perfect time to start this change...if you can stick with it. Any time is a great time to start...if you can stick with it. Key words are "if you can stick with it". Yesterday Jan 18...that's right only 18 days into the New Year, we go into the gym and there were only a few people there : ( Definitely not as crazy as it was the week after the holidays. I turned to my hubbie and said, "Well it looks like resolutions only lasted 18 days this year!". How sad! Usually people at least put the energy in for a full month, before giving in to their unhealthy temptations once again.

Unhealthy temptations...they are everywhere! Desserts, the alarm clock, persuasion, drinks, high calorie meals, processed foods, etc...everywhere!! In the world today, it is hard to go 5 mins without a temptation creeping up on you! You tell yourself over and over again that you are going to be "good" but before you know it you hit that snooze button 5 times, missed the classes at the gym, meet a friend for lunch instead, follow their lead in ordering something high calorie, come home and you think about that treadmill in the basement, but then realize you got some housework to do, by then the kids are home and you've run out of time for dinner, so you head to the freezer-pop in a processed meal, after dinner you sit in the front of the t.v. with your family eating ice cream or snacking on chips and you think to yourself...."I'll be 'good' tomorrow".
Sound familiar? I'm sure we all have these days where we just want to space out, not think about anything, and not do anything. But should this be all the time?

We need to start thinking about our bodies and what they NEED! Our bodies do not need an excessive amount of sleep, our bodies do not need the garbage from fast food restaurants or restaurants in general! Our bodies do not need to be pressured into eating. Our bodies do not need us to be slugs and lounge around all day. Our bodies do not need alcohol. Our bodies do not need that last piece of chocolate cake! Sometimes our body doesn't know what is good for us-cravings!

Our bodies need to rest. Our bodies need a balanced dose of fresh foods. Our bodies need friends who will be supportive of our decision to be healthy. Our bodies need to be taken care of...we only get one so treat it well! Our bodies need exercise, stretching, and activities. Our bodies need us to make the right decisions! Our bodies deserve the best-they do not deserve to be sick or overweight. Our bodies need us to be smart!

I once heard that if you can stick to a habit for 2 weeks, then it will become routine to your life. Start creating healthy habits and making healthy choices for two weeks...when you start to see results in your body, attitude and energy level it will be hard to fall back into unhealthy temptations.

For example-switch from processed foods to making dinners from scratch using fresh veggies and meat- you will appreciate the meal much more, you will burn calories while you cook, and you can experience the feeling of accomplishment!

Another example: at night when you are craving those sweets-grab a piece of fruit with natural sugar. After two weeks, your body will start to crave the natural sugar instead of the junk food! If you want ice cream, try a glass of milk or switch to sherbet or frozen ice.

Want to sleep in or slug around? Put your alarm across the room, go to bed feeling ambitious, visualize the healthy new you before you go to bed! When you wake up, be determined not to snooze!!! Write down the times you want to workout during the day and place it somewhere where it will remind you to do it! Whether it's going to the gym or going downstairs to the treadmill, it will be rough at first to find the motivation, but you need to keep focused on the end result....if you want to change your body, you have to change your mindset-be motivated and look forward to feeling of completion when your workout is done!

Tempted by friends when you go out to eat? Start talking about your weight loss goals, what you have been doing to achieve these goals, and order your food first!! By talking about your goals and what you've been doing will help remind yourself of what you are trying to do to your body so ordering that high calorie food would not be a good idea! Ordering first would take the pressure off the temptations of hearing what your friend is ordering....and maybe your decisions and actions will motivate your friends to eat a little healthier too! : )

So if you have fallen into temptations 19 days into the New Year...time to take the New Year back...claim it back! It's never too late to start living healthy! And if you think the word "resolution" is too cliche...then put it as one of students put it the other day "I don't want this to be a fad, so instead of making a resolution, I am making the decision for a life-change." Perfectly stated!

Let's Talk Zumba

So for those of you who have never heard of Zumba Fitness before (where have you been??) here's some info on this exciting and amazing workout! Zumba was created by Beto Perez in the late 90's...in his native Cali, Columbia when he accidentally left his aerobics music at home on the way to teach his class...oops! He then popped in a mix tape of his favorite music Latin Salsa & Merengue. The class instantly fell in love with this new workout! Beto then came to the United States in 1999, met up with some entrepreneurs and the rest is history! As of October 2010, Zumba is being taught in over 90,000 locations, in 110 countries, with over 10 Million participants taking Zumba classes every week! Amazing!!!!

Zumba is an interval training, with a mix of fast and slow rythyms-Dance & Fitness-to work the heart rate, targeting weight loss. It is a complete body workout...however, it is so much fun, you can't even tell you're working out! Zumba Fitness' Goal is: They want you to want to work out, to love working out, and to get hooked!

Upset vs. Depression vs. Anger

Ok..so I am not an angry person to any degree lol...it's hard for some to even think that I do get angry every once in a while (it really does take a lot of energy to be mad!) But during a conversation with a friend, we brought up the topic of weight loss and motivations for doing so. She had asked what made me want to lose the weight....When I stopped to think about it...at first I thought I was depressed about the situation but then it hit me-I told her that I got ANGRY...not just upset, not depressed, but ANGRY (think the Hulk...well, I guess She-Hulk in this case : ) ) What was I angry at? Myself...the way that I had become so lazy that I had completely let my body and my health get out of shape.

Let's say that you were just upset about your weight gain. Just being upset is not going to make you want to get up and move. You will continue on your path being aware of the mistakes you are making in your health. You will be upset that you missed your time at the gym, but you always tell yourself, "I'll go tomorrow" or "I'll start my diet tomorrow". But does "tomorrow" ever come when you are upset? Nope. ...what does=Being Depressed!

So now you're depressed about your weight gain and the way your body looks. Is depression going to motivate you to do something about it? Once again...nope, you will continue to wallow in self-pity and once again will be thrown into negative eating patterns and usually when you are depressed you do not have any energy, so there goes your workout. The difference between being upset and depressed is that when you're upset you sort of have a drive to lose the weight-you have ideas maybe some goals, when you are depressed, all drive is gone and it's going to take some serious motivation to even get started changing the smallest of habits.

Now getting angry...that is when you get stuff done. I don't know about you, but when I get angry I like to clean and be active...it's sort of the same idea. You just have a feeling in your gut (and no, it's not your tummy rumbling...it's the "motor")that you just have to do something. No joke...this feeling is very difficult to explain. But it's the moment of making it or breaking it=Gut check time...do you have what it takes to change your life or not? It's when you dig in deep and decide that your life is worth it!!! Write some goals down and place them somewhere you can see them...carry them with you. When you feel tempted to slip, check out those goals and see if that slip is worth it...more than likely it won't be. I became so dedicated and disciplined in my eating patterns and workout routines that if I slipped it was not a good day lol. Now being obsessed with working out and eating right is not a good thing (there is such a thing as exercise addiction), but being firm in a healthy routine is a good thing! So dig deep...just don't let your situation bother you, get angry about it and act on it!!!

Three Smart Exchanges & A Few Get-Slim Choices!

Alrighty, lets take a time out and look at our diets shall we?

I ran across an interesting article about fat and I would like to share the recommendations with you!!

3 Smart Exchanges:

Switch From...

Regular Bacon/Sausage to Turkey Bacon/Sausage or Canadian Bacon...why? Pork bacon is loaded with Saturated Fat...the other two are leaner choices.

My opinion: If cooked the right way, turkey bacon does have a chance (however, I have yet to master the timing on this lol...my sister-in-law though has gotten it down!) Now, I love turkey sausage...yes I am going to say it again, I LOVE TURKEY SAUSAGE!! lol! It still has tons of flavor just like its super fatty foe and it has its health advantages without the grease! Canadian Bacon-excellent choice as well, easy to make...recommend!

Switch From...

Stick Margarine to Tub-or Better go to Butter...why? Stick Margarine can have three times the trans fats the tub version does. Butter has no trans fats!

My opinion: I don't like to cook with margarine or butter. I use a light oil cooking spray or olive oil. Now if a recipe just has to have butter/margarine, I stick to the no-salt butter.

Switch From...Premium Ice Cream to Low-Fat...why?

Two scoops of the premiuim kind can have 11 grams of saturated fat-that's about half the amount you should eat for the entire day! Low-fat ice cream can have less than 1 gram.

My opinion: I love ice cream and this really is not a secret to those who know me lol. If you are opting for a low-fat ice cream watch out for sugar content...remember when taking fat out of a food, processors will add "other ingredients" to make it taste better. Just because it says it's low-fat doesn't mean it is better for you...as I said before-Read your labels & be wise!! I stick to premium ice cream but have it in moderation...it is my treat!

Here are a couple get-slim choices! If you are trying to lose weight...try to add a small amount of fat (healthy fat) to your diet, such as...

Almonds- 1oz(23 nuts)
163 Calories
14g Fat

Walnuts- 1/4 Cup
193 Calories
18g Fat

Avocado- 1/4
57 Calories
5g Fat

Olive Oil- 1 Tablespoon
119 Calories
14g Fat

Peanut Butter-1 Tablespoon
94 Calories
8g Fat

Olives- 8 Jumbo
54 Calories
5g Fat

Sunflower Seeds- 1/4 Cup
186 Calories
16g Fat

Just as a small tip-Add some protein to your breakfast to start the day off right! I am in the habit of cooking scrambled eggs mixed with fresh wilted spinach...as a side I pass on the toast and grab 1/8 C Almonds mixed with 3 Dried Apricots and a small amount of dried cranberries....YUM!! That's right, I eat eggs!! Eggs have been frowned upon lately, but allow me to reassure you that eggs are not your enemies! If prepared correctly(No butter, milk, or salt added) there are many health advantages to consuming eggs! If you live an active lifestyle (lifting, light toning, cardio, etc) then your muscles will truely love you for the extra protein! : )
